Insight Out disability discrimination research, key findings:

Our launch report shows that almost two thirds (64%) of independent pubs across the UK have prepared for The Disability Discrimination Act.

The Act, which came into force on 1st October 2004, gives all disabled people rights in the way in which they receive goods and services. The nationwide survey of independent pubs conducted over the first week the new Act was enforced, shows that the majority of publicans have met the new legislation, although there is significant room for improvement.

  • 100% of independent publicans are aware of The Disability Discrimination Act
  • 49% claim to have already met legal requirements
  • 15% have recently made changes spending an average of almost £1,800
  • 17% are planning to make changes but had not done so yet
  • 9% have not made changes and are not planning to do so
  • 10% cannot make changes due to listed building restrictions
