The Brahm Gallery's CuratorOriginally from Dewsbury West Yorkshire, Brahm Gallery Curator Paddy Hartley bases his practice as an artist, curator, artist mentor, arts consultant and educator in London’s East End. A graduate of the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff with a Masters Degree in Sculpture and Ceramics with Distinction in 1998, his open-minded approach to technique and appropriation of material to subject shape his professional practice and curatorial philosophy. This is Paddy’s second period as Brahm Gallery Curator having first run the space from 2001 to 2004 producing over 30 solo and group exhibitions. As Curator he supports emerging artists with an emphasis on work that could be seen as falling between Fine Art and Craft. ” I see no difference between the artist using ‘craft’ techniques and the crafts person whose work is concept and content driven. I prefer to see Brahm Gallery exhibitors as ‘Creatives’ who communicate narratives, concepts, opinions and stories using their own unique visual language, whatever form it may take”. In addition to his role as Brahm Gallery Curator, Paddy continues to create his own new work, primarily through his widely acclaimed ‘Project Facade'. His artistic response to the lives of First World War servicemen who underwent pioneering facial reconstruction at the hand of surgeon Sir Harold Gillies was exhibited in the exhibition ‘Faces of Battle’ throughout 2007/8 at the National Army Museum London which he co-curated. He has also exhibited in Project Facade and other work in at the Museum of Arts & Design New York, Sydney, Munster, Mannheim and throughout the UK and has been the recipient of major funding from the Wellcome Trust and Arts Council England. His work and writing is also widely published across a broad spectrum of journals, magazines and books. Paddy has also produced and delivered numerous education projects for museums and schools in Leeds and London. Most notably, for the Victoria & Albert Museum in London since 2001 for exhibitions such as the Vivienne Westwood retrospective, Art Deco and Lee Miller exhibitions to name a few. He is also a digital artist on the V&A’s highly acclaimed ‘Every Object Tells A Story’ public engagement programme.
