Weird Heads
An Exhibition of New Work by Nichola Pemberton

10 August – 5 September 2007

Walk into the space at Brahm Gallery and a sea of staring spheres surrounds you. Weird Heads is a vast number of circular drawings on brightly coloured card, wall hung on mass. The mark-making in these pieces is repetitive and scratchy, referencing formal abstract art. Made in a delirious tizzy, the result can be described as simplistic, thoughtful, sad, childish or absolutely ridiculous. The work exists for its own sake, negating any direct contextual reference.

The work addresses both frivolity and apathy as it manifests itself in art and in life, offering a perception of present day society in a contemporary western context. Though the point of the work is not to discuss any of these issues directly, it does make such a discussion possible.
