Textile Works by Rachael Taylor
8 August – 1 September 2006

Award-winning textile artist and print designer is having first solo exhibition at the Brahm Gallery. Although a recent graduate, young textile designer Rachael Taylor is no stranger to making waves in the design industry. This year alone she received 1st place in the Janome Creative Awards 2005 for one of her paper skirt designs, Laurence King Publishing has selected her work for a new book called ‘Contemporary Patterns’ (available in 2007), and she has been commissioned to design a collection of rugs for Forty Thieves, the bespoke London-based rug company.

Brahm Gallery is delighted to be presenting an exhibition of Taylor’s work from her Paper Collection and Fabric Collection, for her first solo exhibition in the UK. These Collections demonstrate her unique style, which possesses both experimental qualities and complex detail through her adept methods of screen-printing and machine embroidering onto multilayered surfaces.

Further Information

Rachael Taylor was born in the Wirral, Merseyside, in 1983. Her interest in textiles began whilst studying for an Art A’ level where she first started to translate and experiment with her ideas using fabrics and stitch. Having a flair for textiles, Taylor went on to complete an art foundation course within this area and achieved a BA (Hons) in Textile and Fashion Design at the University of Leeds, from which she graduated in June 2005. Taylor’s collections, the Fabric Collection and the Paper Collection, demonstrate her unique style, which possesses both experimental qualities and complex detail through her adept methods of screen-printing and machine embroidering onto multilayered surfaces. She explains:

“My work deals with surface pattern, texture and intricate detail; I produce pieces through a variety of media, from paper and printmaking to fabric and stitch. Inspiration comes from simple everyday things that I see and photograph, such as torn posters, graffiti, broken glass, run-down buildings, broken fences, scratched surfaces and objects that have been forgotten. These items have unique characteristics that have been explored through my pieces”

Taylor’s collections demonstrate two distinct approaches: the first being a collection of intricate works made from layers of torn paper and stitch; and the second being quirky textiles that have been manipulated and sewn together for couture fashion fabrics. From these contrasting, trademark techniques she has merged intricate embroidery work alongside innovative print and created textiles and clothing that have been exhibited both regionally and around the world. Her diverse pieces have been seen during the University of Leeds Fashion show and the Yorkshire Fair 2005, and she has been exhibiting her print designs in New York, Japan and Paris, whilst selling designs to the British high street.

Taylor has recently been involved in a charity project with a fellow graduate designing a collection of rugs for London-based bespoke rug company ‘Forty Thieves’. Both her surface patterns can currently be seen on Hallmark Ownbrand products and will be published in a Laurence King design book, Contemporary Patterns, out in 2007.
