Ian Cale
'Other Places'
July 31st - September 2nd 2002

In Ian Cale's recent paintings he documents the visible signs of history hidden within unfamiliar places, particularly urban landscapes. The memory of a sense of place can often take the form of a mundane incident or seemingly insignificant detail such as a doorway or blistered paint on a window frame. Subtle ambiguities of space are manipulated with complex surfaces reminiscent of Beckman. Rich ochre's and earthy tones feature heavily in these, his latest works together with an understated use of text, which is often hidden within the complexities of the distressed picture surface.
