Lunch Hour: New Work by Mike Pinches

6 December

Originally published in The Guardian and exhibited here, for the first time, at Brahm Gallery, Mike Pinches’ photo story, Lunch Hour, illustrates the British lunchtime ritual in the cities of northern England. And lunch – arguably the most important meal of the day – is more often than not shown as being taken in passing – a snappy snack, a brief bite, a fast food.

Okay, so the British don’t have the benefit of the lengthy, midday treat of la siesta (or the warm climate that often goes with it) but what Pinches’ photographs highlight is how we take a moment to find our place in the city. On benches, on steps, and sometimes on suitcases – people take their seats to relax, to reflect and to watch the world go by.

Mike Pinches is a Leeds-based photographer specialising in editorial and documentary work throughout the UK. His work was featured in this year's Creative Review Photography Annual
